SOLTEC SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE FIRST DIGITAL SUBSTATION IN LATIN AMERICA

General Electric (GE) launched the commercial operation of the Manchay digital substation, owned by Luz del Sur, to provide electricity to the southeast of Lima.
With Soluciones Teleinformáticas y Control SA (Soltec), the 220 kV TSS substation will be implemented, distributing power to one million people in Manchay.
Through the merging units, the use of metal cables is eliminated, reducing the risk of accidents and infrastructure costs since they are responsible for converting and transmitting, through fiber optics, all signals and data from equipment in the yard to the meters and protection relays.
Another advantage is the possibility of receiving data via GPS and Glonass positioning systems, guaranteeing the synchronization of all the protection and automation equipment of the substation.
“With smarter equipment, we can save space, improve data reliability, and reduce operating costs, essential factors for grid productivity and efficiency,” explained Emanuel Bertolini, general director of GE Grid Solutions Americas division.
This type of station technology uses analog and digital fusion units (MU) to convert data from primary substation equipment, such as current transformers, voltage transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and power transformers, to digital protections through sampled values.
